I'd hate to see a graph of Dwell's circulation.

My read is that

1) its role has largely been taken up by the blogosphere

2) the domestic modernism it has promoted has set with the vicissitudes of fashion (american heritage anyone?) and the burst of the real estate bubble it did too much to promote.

It's less an issue of style or circulation, than of a model, like all shelter/design mags, that depends on advertisers for revenue. if the real estate market goes down, the dollars allotted to advertising pages dries up.

So much of the resistance of print media resides in the need/desire that people have to possess ownership of a thing. A blog is transitory, the online editions of magazines such as Wired or the NYTimes are phantoms of their print versions. No one stumbles upon a 10 year old copy of the nytimes while cleaning out their browsers cache. Until new media address physical ownership those paper models will continue to linger.
